Women who protect us – honoring female members of municipal fire and rescue departments from all over Lake County is the theme of the Lake County Women’s Coalition Annual Tea Party to be held on Sunday, October 14 at the Country Squire Banquet Facility, 19133 Belvidere Road in Grayslake. Women from Countryside, Lake Villa Rescue, Lake Zurich, Long Grove, Mundelein, Waukegan and Winthrop Harbor are just a few who will be represented.

“Each year the Lake County Women’s Coalition selects a theme to honor women in our community. We are proud to bring light to the brave women who risk their lives protecting us as members of the fire and rescue departments in our various communities,” said Shirley Christian, chair of the coalition. Next year the Coalition will honor women who protect us as members of the police force.

This year’s event will also feature Captain Cynthia Mikal as keynote speaker. Mikal was an active full-time fire fighter for Fox Lake Fire Dept. for 10 years and since March 2007, she is a volunteer officer for the Fox Lake Fire Dept. She has been in the fire service for 20 years. She is currently the Administrative Coordinator for the Lake and McHenry County Fire Departments' Specialized Response Teams. Mikal says, "I do a plethora of things for the Dive, Hazardous Material, Technical Rescue, Wildland, Side Scan Sonar and Mechanics Teams by day and by night and week-ends, I am a Fire Captain and Medical Officer for the Fox Lake Volunteer Fire Dept."

Proceeds from the tea and raffle are used to fund the Coalition’s scholarships at the College of Lake County. For more information about Lake County Women’s Coalition go to www.lakecountywomen.org.  Doors open at Noon and the Tea Party begins at 1 p.m. Tickets for the Tea Party are $25 each and must be purchased in advance by contacting Helen Scott, treasurer, at 847-336-1795. Deadline for reservations is October 4.
